Another woman found breathing after being declared dead by funeral home in New York

MILLER PLACE, N.Y. — A woman was found breathing at a New York funeral home hours after she was reportedly declared dead at a nursing home.

An unidentified 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead Saturday morning just after 11 a.m. at the Water’s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Long Island, New York, according to The Associated Press.

She was taken to the O.B. Davis Funeral Homes a few hours later at 1:30 p.m., Suffolk County Police Department said in a news release obtained by the AP. By 2:09 p.m. she was found breathing.

The woman was taken to the hospital, according to the AP.

The New York Attorney General’s office and the health department are investigating, the AP reported.

“Out of respect for the privacy and confidentiality of the families we are honored to serve, we are not in a position to comment further on this matter,” funeral home officials said in a statement to the AP.

There has been no update on the woman’s condition. She has also not yet been identified.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.

A similar situation happened on Jan. 3 in Urbandale, Iowa.

According to a report from the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals, a staff member at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbandale reported that a 66-year-old woman had died at about 6 a.m. CST on Jan. 3, the Des Moines Register reported.

The AP reported that the woman was put in a body bag and taken to the Ankeny Funeral Home & Crematory where she was reportedly found breathing by workers. She was brought back to hospice care and died two days later on Jan. 5, according to a report from the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals.

The hospice care facility was fined $10,000 for the premature death declaration by the woman’s family, according to the AP.
