ANDOVER, Mass. — Temperatures started fairly warm but began dropping quickly, leading to concerns over a flash freeze on roadways statewide.
State highway department officials are warning commuters and travelers of what’s expected to be a “horrible” commute. Overhead highway road signs have weather notices posted to warn those driving about the icy conditions anticipated.
I’ve seen a lot of @MassDOT trucks out just in the last hour on 93 S. They weren’t able to pre-treat roads due to the rain, per @JLGulliver but are preparing to lay down materials when freezing rain begins to fall. Temp is around 32 here. Roads do not appear frozen yet. @boston25 pic.twitter.com/gCHPtaKI3C

“We can’t put out materials and driving chemicals to prevent that ice from forming,” said state’s Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. “We are going to be in a reactionary mode throughout this storm.”
After a soaker of a morning, we now have sleet in Andover. 93 s traffic still moving OK. A few slowdowns on my map but unclear if that’s volume or accidents. @boston25 pic.twitter.com/BsVgVm2IKp

Overnight rain would have washed away any pre-treatment of roads. Instead, MassDOT crews are monitoring conditions while preparing to salt surfaces once the changeover happens.
Sleet and now a slightly slower ride on 93 s as temps keep dropping. @boston25 pic.twitter.com/NW3bVIpNsT

In addition, they are asking drivers to be mindful of the treacherous roads and give themselves extra time, as well as noting that if you see a road surface that appears wet, it may well be ice.
