On your radar: ‘Impactful’ weekend storm could bring heavy snow to Massachusetts

DEDHAM, Mass. — Keep those snow shovels handy! After light snow fell across Massachusetts on Thursday before transitioning to a wintry mix, the weekend is expected to bring a “more impactful” storm to the region.

Our next winter storm looks like it will move in on Saturday night, with the most snow accumulation happening between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the Boston 25 Weather team’s latest blog post.

Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz said on Thursday we’ll be on a winter storm watch starting Saturday night. In a post on X, the Chief wrote, “Storm likely hits from midnight to noon Sunday.”

In his Thursday forecast, Meteorologist Tucker Antico said the potential for at least a half foot of snow “is very realistic” across southern New England.

“There’s likely above a 50 percent chance of seeing at least 4 inches of snowfall, if not closer to 6, 8, and 10 is possible in some spots,” Antico said.

It remains too early to issue a projected snowfall map, according to Antico.

Antico added, “Exactly where the heaviest snow lines up is still up in the air...A lot of the data I’ve seen suggests it’ll be in really most of Massachusetts, but there’s also a southern trend beginning right now. So, before we put numbers on the board, we want to get more confident in if that trend continues.”

This snowstorm should wrap up by late Sunday morning or noon with no impact on Sunday night Super Bowl plans.

There is also a “good chance” we see more snow “on at least one, if not two days next week,” according to Antico.

“Beyond Sunday, we’re in a really active weather pattern right now,” Antico said. “The potential for another legitimate storm is there.”

Antico added, “Stick with us as we keep an eye on real winter, which has seemingly arrived in February.”
