Worcester community mourns loss of retired firefighter injured in the line of duty in 2006

Retired Worcester firefighter Mark Stomskiii, (Worcester Fire Department)

WORCESTER — The Worcester community is mourning the loss of retired firefighter Mark Stomski, who was injured in the line of duty nearly two decades ago.

Stomski died on Sunday from complications from those work injuries, the Worcester Fire Department said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. He was 53.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Marks (sic) family,” the department said.

Stomski was appointed to the Worcester Fire Department on March 8, 2004.

He retired in 2008 after he was injured in the line of duty, according to the department.

According to the Telegram & Gazette, Stomski had been out of work for more than a year after an injury that happened at the McKeon Road fire station in 2006.

A parked fire truck’s brakes let go, the truck rolled back and a door slammed into Stomski’s chest, the newspaper reported.

In 2007, Stomski told the newspaper that his chest was heavily bruised after the incident, that the pain continued and he had shortness of breath. A medical exam later revealed blood clots in his lungs and he needed bottled oxygen to help him breathe.

The newspaper reported that Stomski’s condition was complicated by secondary pulmonary hypertension, a disorder of the blood vessels in the lungs.

“I knew what I signed on for,” Stomski, then a 36-year-old married father of three, told the newspaper in 2007. “You take a chance every time a call comes in. But I didn’t think that it might end like this.”
