‘We’re just grateful’: Full recovery expected for Lawrence woman trapped beneath her car

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Zoa Mendez, the Lawrence woman trapped under her car while making a floral delivery Thursday afternoon, is expected to make a full recovery.

Zoa’s daughter, Zoa Rosario, told Boston 25 News’ Bob Ward that her mother suffered a hairline fracture in one of her legs, and some bruising, but no major broken bones in an accident that’s received widespread attention.

“We’re just grateful that she’s doing well and that she is working towards getting her strength back,” Zoa Rosario said.

On Thursday, Zoa Mendez was delivering flowers on Bennington Street when, suddenly, somehow, her car slipped and fell right on top of her, trapping Zoa underneath her own car.

A group of neighbors quickly got to work, and with police and first responders, managed to lift the car off Zoa Mendez, who is in her 70s.

The entire incident was captured on video.

“What did you think when you saw that video?” Ward asked Rosario.

“It was shocking. It was scary,” she said.

Zoa Rosario said she’s not sure how the accident happened, and neither does her mother.

“She said it happened so quickly that she couldn’t really put together in the moment what happened. I don’t think she’s aware how many people went out there to help her,” Rosario said.

Zoa Mendez co-founded Mendez Flowers on Broadway with her sister, more than thirty years ago.

Today, Zoa Rosario is running the business.

Now, she is keeping an eye on her mother, too.

Zoa Rosario will never forget how her community, complete strangers, came together, to help save her mother’s life.

“Throughout the years, she has given her business, and so much, to the community of Lawrence,” Rosario said. “We’re grateful there are good people out there that helped her, and responded to her.”

Zoa Mendez is expected to be released from the hospital soon and is likely to have to undergo a lengthy period of physical rehabilitation, according to her daughter.
