Video appears to show midair collision between American Airlines jet, Army helicopter

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An American Airlines passenger jet collided midair with an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, prompting a large search-and-rescue operation in the nearby Potomac River.

John Donnelly, the fire chief in the nation’s capital, announced at a Thursday morning news conference that officials didn’t believe there were any survivors of the collision.

A Kennedy Center Webcam facing Reagan Airport captured video that showed a flash of orange near where the collision occurred.

At least 28 bodies have been pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac, according to Donnelly.

The body of the plane was found upside down in three sections in waist-deep water. The wreckage of the helicopter was also found.
