Truck Day: Red Sox equipment truck ready to roll to Spring Training with thousands of gear in tow

Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted six more weeks of winter but a sure sign of spring is here.

The Red Sox equipment truck left Boston Friday, bound to make the nearly 1,500-mile road trip down to the team’s Spring Training facilities in Fort Myers, Florida.

The 53-foot truck will carry a load of equipment that includes:

• 20,400 baseballs
• 1,100 bats
• 200 batting gloves
• 200 batting helmets
• 320 Batting Practice tops
• 160 white game jerseys
• 300 pairs of pants
• 400 t-shirts
• 400 pairs of socks
• 20 cases of bubble gum
• 60 cases of sunflower seeds

The celebration of Truck Day has been a Red Sox tradition since 2003 and signals the unofficial start of Spring Training.

The truck departed Fenway Park led by a flatbed truck carrying Wally the Green Monster and his sister Tessie tossing soft baseballs to fans.
