Tracking rain then a changeover to snow: How much will fall and when?

The Boston 25 Weather team is tracking the arrival of rain and a changeover to snow in Massachusetts heading into the weekend.

Rain will spread across the region by mid-morning through noon on Friday, with showers persisting all afternoon into the evening.

Conditions will then turn snowy and slushy Friday night through the overnight hours as temperatures drop.

Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear said 1-3 inches of snow is possible for parts of northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Communities along and south of the Massachusetts Turnpike will likely see a coating to an inch of snow. Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands are in for a possible coating of snow.

Snow showers are expected to linger into Saturday morning.=

“Be careful for slippery roads where moisture freezes,” Spear warned in her latest forecast.

Highs in the lower 30s are expected over the weekend. While Saturday and Sunday will be mostly dry, late Sunday night will feature another chance for snow.

“My early projection for Sunday snow is a coating to 2, at most 3 inches, Sunday night into Monday,” Spear said.
