ANDOVER, N.H. — A 17-year-old driver was killed in a crash into a drainage ditch in New Hampshire over the weekend, state police said Monday.
Wyatt Carleton of Andover died following the midday crash on Sunday, state police said.
At 11:53 p.m. Sunday, troopers responded to a report of a truck off the road, fully submerged in water, on Currier Road, state police said. The caller reported that the driver was believed to still be inside.
East Andover firefighters responded and removed Carleton, the lone occupant, from the 2010 Gray Nissan Frontier pickup truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation found that Carleton was traveling westbound on Currier Road when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the truck veered off the road to the left as it was crossing over a culvert.
The truck flipped over the edge of the road and landed in the drainage ditch, coming to rest on its roof, state police said.
An initial investigation found that the truck appeared to have drifted on the ice-covered road a few hundred feet before it went off into the drainage ditch.
All aspects of the crash remain under investigation.
Authorities closed the road for approximately three hours. Franklin Fire also responded to assist.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or with information that may assist investigators is asked to contact Trooper Conor Davis at Conor.K.Davis@dos.nh.gov.
Andover is a small town northeast of Concord. The town’s population was 2,406 at the 2020 census.
