STONEHAM, Mass. — The Stoneham Fire Department battled a two-alarm structure fire amidst the freezing-cold temperatures on Sunday.

Fire crews were dispatched around 1:35 p.m. to 39 Tamarock Terrace when a caller alerted authorities of a fire inside their home.

Upon arrival, heavy fire was pouring from the garage of the home, which prompted the two residents to evacuate on their own. The fire then spread into the attached home.

Fire crews immediately upgraded the response to a two-alarm, requesting mutual aid.

Crews began stretching two hose lines inside the home and began attacking it. Crews were able to extinguish the fire in 30 minutes.

“This was a tough fire and the freezing weather conditions made it even more challenging, but all the firefighters on scene worked hard and did a great job,” said Stoneham Fire Chief Grafton. “I’d also like to recognize our dispatchers for doing great work today.”

Crews from Woburn, Wakefield, Melrose, Reading, and Winchester provided mutual aid at the scene. Coverage of Stoneham Fire Station was provided by Saugus, Medford, and Malden. Stoneham Police Department, Stoneham Department of Public Works, and Armstrong Ambulance also assisted at the scene. Representatives of Boston A10 also responded to the scene to rehabilitate firefighters

One Woburn firefighter was treated for overexertion, but no other injuries were reported. Companies remained on the scene until 4 p.m. to survey for hotspots.

The two residents of the home were displaced but are staying with family in the area.

The initial investigation of the fire appeared to be accidental but remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
