Standoff suspect armed with shotgun, rifle held 3 people hostage inside Boston home, police say

BOSTON — A man facing charges in connection with an hourslong standoff in Boston was armed with a shotgun and rifle while he held three people hostage in a bathroom before surrendering to police, authorties announced Tuesday.

Andres Rivera, 42, of Boston, was arraigned Tuesday in West Roxbury District Court on charges of armed home invasion, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, eleven counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, two counts of malicious damage to a motor vehicle, three counts of armed kidnapping, and resisting arrest, according to the Boston Police Department.

Officers responding to a report of a person with a gun at 19 Hopewell Road in the city’s Hyde Park Section just after 3:30 a.m. on Monday observed heavy damage to the front door and ballistic evidence nearby, police said. They then spotted the muzzle of a firearm protruding around the corner on the second floor of the home.

“One officer moved towards the armed suspect in an attempt to gain control of the weapon, but the suspect retreated further into the residence,” the police department said in a statement. “Officers quickly found cover and issued verbal commands for the suspect to drop the firearm.”

Rivera was seen holding a shotgun with another rifle secured across his chest, according to police. Officers then determined that he had been allegedly holding three people hostage inside a bathroom.

“As officers continued to issue verbal commands to de-escalate the situation, they observed the suspect pointing the firearm in their direction,” police added. “The suspect fired a round from the shotgun damaging property, but not striking the officers.”

Officers assigned to the department’s SWAT and negotiating teams were called to the scene and established communication with Rivera.

Rivera agreed to release the three hostages and he ultimately surrendered peacefully after hours of negotiation, according to police.

A subsequent search of the home on Hopewell Road yielded an EAA Churchill 12-gauge shotgun, an IWI Tavor rifle, two PMAG magazines loaded with ten rounds each, one Clear Cross magazine loaded with ten rounds, one Clear Cross magazine loaded with nine rounds, a bag containing 159 .223 caliber rounds, a loose .223 round, one black bag with 105, 12-gauge shotgun shells, one lettered bag containing seven 12-gauge shotgun slugs and 19 12-gauge buckshot shells, and four spent 12-gauge shotgun shells, police said.

Rivera was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.
