AVON, Mass. — A South Shore community is mourning the death of an active-duty firefighter who passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve.
“It is with profound sadness that the Avon Fire Department announces the active-duty death of firefighter and paramedic Justin Powers,” Avon Fire Chief David Charest announced Thursday in a statement.
Powers joined the Avon Fire Department in August 2020 as a firefighter and emergency medical technician, according to Charest. In March 2021, he graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy as a member of Class BW09, which included 14 graduates from eight fire departments.
Charest noted Powers also worked for Boston Medflight and served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard since 2014.
“Please keep the Powers family and the members of the Avon Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers,” Charest added.
There was no immediate word on the cause of Powers’ death.
Arrangements will be announced at a later time.
