SOUTH PORTLAND, M.E. — Police in South Portland announced the arrest of the suspect of the Wednesday, February 5, Maine mall shooting.

The department wrote on their Facebook that the suspect, Ahmed Basheer Awad, “wanted to turn himself in to police so there could be a safe and peaceful resolution for all involved.”

Both the Department and Awad worked together to accomplish this goal through a third-party associate.

At 3:30 PM Thursday, Detectives met outside of Cumberland County Jail, where Awad was waiting to be taken into custody.

Awad is being charged with:

  • Elevated Aggravated Assault class A felony
  • Reckless Conduct With a Dangerous Weapon class C felony
  • Carrying a Concealed/Threatening Display of a Weapon (person under 21 years of age)
  • Class D misdemeanor

Awad is currently being held on a $100,000 cash bail pending his court arraignment, which is set for Friday, February 7.

Recovery efforts are still underway for the firearm used.
