Snow in Worcester sends people to outdoor ice rink, supermarket

WORCESTER — A picturesque, wintry scene began to take shape in downtown Worcester on Sunday evening.

A Winter Parking Ban took effect in the city at 10 a.m. Sunday ahead of the inclement weather. Winter Parking | City of Worcester, MA

The rain eventually switched to snow around 5 p.m., which was a welcome sight to Priyanka Benachamardi, who drove from Hopkinton to Worcester to ice skate on the seasonal rink outside city hall.

“I thought skating on the rink when it was snowing would be magical, and it’s just one of my bucket list things to do,” she explains.

While some people merrily soaked in the fresh powder, others were working hard to plow the streets including Department of Public Works trucks. Smaller, snow removal devices were on sidewalks carving pathways for pedestrians.

Meanwhile, supermarkets were busy with people stocking up on food before too much snow stuck.

“We’re coming to get some snacks, juice, and stuff like that so we can stay inside and stay hydrated,” says Trey Irving.

The timing of the storm is welcome to many people, too, with tomorrow being a federal holiday. Many people are not worried about how this will affect their schedule on Monday since people are off from work and kids don’t have school.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
