‘She screamed stop’: Mass. doctor accused of sexually assaulting patients arraigned on rape charges

WOBURN, Mass. — A former doctor indicted on rape charges after investigators say he sexually assaulted women at a Massachusetts hospital faced a judge on Friday.

Dr. Derrick Todd, who practiced at several locations, was arraigned in Woburn’s Middlesex Superior Court on two counts of rape, less than a day after a Middlesex County grand jury returned the indictment against him. Todd pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutor Caroline Evans alleged in court that Todd assaulted two women who were his patients at Framingham Hospital. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Framingham Police Chief Lester Baker said the alleged incidents occurred in December of 2022 and in June of 2023 during medical examinations.

“They [the victims] went in for medical appointments and ultimately received some form of pelvic exam or pap smear tests,” Evans said in court. “On both of those occasions, the tests extended beyond what was ‘normal.’”

Evans added, “In one case, the victim was in such pain that she screamed, ‘stop,’ and yet the exam continued after she continually repeated ‘stop’ multiple times. On another occasion, the victim stated that she didn’t wish for this type of exam. It proceeded, it happened anyway, and during it, she again reiterated her lack of consent.”

Todd, a Wayland resident who lives with his wife of 25 years and two children, attended UMass Chan Medical School, his attorney Ingrid Martin told the court.

Todd, most recently a rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Rheumatology Center at Faulkner Hospital, forced at least one of his patients to strip naked in front of him before groping and fondling her body during “phony” breast and vaginal exams, a lawsuit filed in 2023 alleged.

Brigham and Women’s received anonymous complaints about Todd in April 2023 and launched its own investigation.

In a statement shared with Boston 25 News on Friday, Brigham and Women’s Hospital said, We first reported Dr. Todd to law enforcement during our investigation, following the receipt of two anonymous complaints, and we continued to work closely with them throughout their investigation. We also reached out to patients who were seen by Dr. Todd and offered extensive support for follow-up medical care, as well as assistance if they wanted to report their experience to law enforcement.”

The hospital added, “We take our duty to care for our patients and keep them safe extremely seriously. We are deeply distressed to learn of the depth and breadth of harm that Dr. Todd is accused of having caused. We will continue to provide support and respond to our patients’ needs during this challenging time. We recognize the incredible courage it has taken for all patients who have come forward to ensure that this conduct was exposed.”

Todd also previously practiced at Charles River Medical Associates, Ryan and Baker said.

More than 200 women and several men have accused Todd in a consolidated lawsuit of performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations, and rectal examinations over a period of more than a decade.

The Commonwealth asked that Todd be held on $25,000, but the judge presiding over the hearing set his bail at $10,000 after Martin repeatedly cited her client’s lack of a criminal history.

“Because of those allegations, he voluntarily entered into an agreement not to practice medicine,” Martin explained as she stressed to the court that her client isn’t a flight risk. “He has been in agreement with the Board of Medicine not to practice medicine since the fall of 2023. He has remained here nevertheless...He has remained in Massachusetts the entire time.”

Todd was also ordered to surrender his passport, stay away from his alleged victims, and refrain from practicing medicine if he’s able to post bail.

Anyone with information that could help detectives with their ongoing investigation is urged to contact Framingham police at 508-532-5924.

Todd is due back in court for a conference on February 11.
