A security official for Boston Public Schools has been placed on leave after being charged with raping a woman at the Massachusetts State Police barracks on Martha’s Vineyard.
In August, a woman told investigators she was sexually assaulted inside the State Police barracks in Oak Bluffs.
Oak Bluffs Police said 27-year-old Edward J. Brown was arrested and charged on Friday.
Boston Public Schools released the following statement:
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. BPS will cooperate fully in the investigation.”
The district said Brown did not have any interactions with students and that the case does not involve students.
Brown has been placed on administrative leave pending a termination hearing.
Police said they received a report shortly before 1 a.m. on Aug. 15 about a distressed woman who was naked on the side of the road near the State Police barracks in Oak Bluffs.
The caller remained with the woman and transported her to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
The woman told police she had been out with friends in Oak Bluffs earlier that night when an unknown man, later identified as Brown, approached the group.
She told officers that Brown attempted to grab her and tried to buy her a drink.
The woman said she later remembered waking up naked in an unfamiliar location with Brown on top of her.
She told officers she fled down two flights of stairs, left the building, and ran into the street.
The woman said she was outside for several minutes before someone found her.
Brown was arraigned Wednesday and ordered held on $10,000 bail with conditions.
He is scheduled to return to court Dec. 3 for a pretrial hearing.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
