BOSTON — The southbound side of Route 1A in East Boston will remain closed for the Tuesday morning commute after a charter bus transporting workers to Logan Airport toppled multiple utility poles on Monday morning.
Video from the scene showed a crashed Academy bus with a shattered windshield stopped on the southbound side of 1A at 175 William F. McClellan Highway, which carries traffic to the airport.
Massachusetts State Police troopers were detouring southbound traffic at Boardman Street and northbound traffic at Addison Street for much of the day, according to MassDOT.
In an update shared shortly before 8 p.m., the Boston Police Department announced northbound lanes had reopened to traffic, but warned that southbound lanes would remain closed for morning commute as crews continue to work.
East Boston Traffic update: McClellan Highway will remain closed at Boardman St tonight and tomorrow in the direction of the Sumner and Ted Williams Tunnels as well as Logan International Airport. This will impact the morning commute on Tuesday. Please seek an alternate route.

“Drivers navigating to Logan Airport are encouraged to plan for extra travel time,” MassDOT wrote in a post on X.
Boston police said the bus knocked down four light poles and two transformers shortly before 5:45 a.m., leaving wires strewn across the highway in the area of Suffolk Downs.
The bus had several people on board and two injuries were reported. Police said both people were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
One of the injured people, the driver of the bus, was released from the hospital late in the day.
In a statement, Massport said, “The bus was transporting employees. Passengers should expect delays getting to the airport.”
Motorists were urged to avoid the area due to the heavy delays.
Traffic in East Boston, Revere, and Chelsea was impacted by the crash as crews worked to repair the damage.
An investigation is ongoing.
“Academy Express is working with state police and the BPD as they conduct an investigation into the accident.” Academy Exoress LLC said in a statement.
