SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Police have identified the man wanted in connection with a brazen daytime shooting at the Maine Mall in Portland, Maine, on Wednesday.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Ahmed Basheer Awad, 20, of Westbrook, Maine, on a charge of elevated aggravated assault, according to the South Portland Police Department.

One person was wounded in the shooting at the largest shopping mall in the state of Maine. Police on Wednesday night said the victim was in surgery and expected to survive.

Officers responding to the mall evacuated all tenants, staff, and visitors. A subsequent search of the mall for Awad proved unsuccessful.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting is “an isolated incident,” police said.

Investigators are asking the public to not approach the suspect if they see him.

Anyone with information on Awad’s whereabouts is urged to contact South Portland Police detectives at 207-799-5511.

You can also leave an anonymous tip for investigators by calling 207-347-4100.

Awad is expected to face more charges “as the case evolves,” police noted.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
