SOMERVILLE, MASS. — An Eversource worker is being praised for using his bucket truck to rescue a woman from a raging fire in Somerville.
That electrical worker was doing a job nearby on Monday and rushed over to the burning home on Marion Street.
A picture taken by a neighbor shows the resident clinging onto an awning as flames shot out of the windows.
That woman crawled into the bucket and was lowered to safety.
“She was distraught and emphasized that her dog was still in there. She kind of looked like she wanted to go back in,” said neighbor Al Janik.
Janik told Boston 25 News that the worker patiently reasoned with the woman before fire crews arrived on scene.
“It was good, smart work by him,” he said. “It was shocking to see the flames just flying out of there.”
Neighbors were worried that the flames could spread to neighboring buildings.
“I was scared for my pets, and I am several houses down. I could only imagine what it was like for anyone who had a pet in there,” said neighbor Aran Ink.
Neighbors said the woman’s dog did not survive and credited the electrical worker for preventing a far worse outcome.
That worker declined to be identified and did not want praise for the brave rescue.
“I’d like to really give credit to that worker. He did a hell of a job, definitely saved the woman’s life,” said Somerville Fire Chief Charles Breen.
The resident who was rescued was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters were able to contain the flames to one unit, but the connected units have extensive smoke and water damage.
The cause has not yet been determined.
