NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — One person is dead after a raging fire in New Bedford Monday afternoon.
The fire began inside the multi-story home on Cotter Street around 1:15 p.m., according to New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger.
Firefighters arrived to find flames erupting from the first floor, extending through the second floor and through the roof.
A tenant had to be rescued from the second floor and several other tenants who had already managed to get outside were treated for injuries.
One person living on the first floor was unable to make it out and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Kruger.
Four people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
Despite slippery and icy conditions, firefighters were able to get the fire under control. No firefighters were injured.
The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
