Video shows dramatic rescue of man and dog who fell through the ice at Wellesley lake

WELLESLEY, Mass. — A man and his canine companion found themselves in a dangerous situation over the weekend after falling through the ice in Wellesley.

According to fire officials, they received a 911 call around 4:44 p.m. on Sunday reporting a dog had fallen through the ice at Lake Waban. In an attempt to rescue the dog, the owner had also fallen into the frigid waters and was unable to get out.

Video from a Wellesley Police Department shows both owner and dog a considerable distance from the shoreline.

Knowing time was of the essence, firefighters sprung into action, first rescuing the dog’s owner and pulling him to safety.

Once the man was on-shore in the care of EMS, crews went back into the water to rescue “Tommy” the dog.

The pup, who was struggling to stay afloat in the freezing waters, was even further from shore than his owner, making the rescue especially difficult.

Battling both the temperature and time, firefighters swam through the ice-encrusted lake, eventually bringing the dog safely to shore.

The dog’s owner was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Tommy the dog was transported to a local vet clinic to be treated for hypothermia.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
