NFL told New England Patriots to shut down Bluesky account, team employee says

The New England Patriots have nearly 16 million followers across Facebook, X and Instagram. But there is one rising social media platform the organization has been told not to break ground on, according to a high-ranking team employee.

During the January 16 episode of the team’s podcast, Patriots Unfilfted, host and VP of content for Kraft Sports & Entertainment Fred Kirsch responded to a message from a fan asking if the team would soon launch an account on Bluesky.

Kirsch responded that the team’s account had already been launched - and shut down.

“Well, right now we’re not allowed to. We had an account briefly on Bluesky but the league asked us to take it down because it’s not an approved social media platform for the NFL yet,” Kirsch detailed.

Kirsch went on to explain that the team was awaiting word when it could rejoin the platform.

While it remains small compared to established online spaces such as X, Blueksy has emerged as an alternative for those looking for a different mood, lighter and friendlier and less influenced by Musk.

Bluesky said in mid-November that its total users surged to 15 million, up from roughly 13 million at the end of October, as some X users look for an alternative platform to post their thoughts and talk to others online.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
