Massachusetts — Several new laws will take effect on New Year’s Day in Massachusetts and will impact a lot of people.
There is a new law around salary and wage transparency.
The goal is to close the gender and racial wage gaps in the state. The key provision doesn’t kick in until October 29th. That’s when companies with more than 25 employees must disclose salary ranges in their job postings. And workers will have a protected right to ask for salary ranges in the workplace.
There’s a tax break coming for many Bay State families. Starting with the 2024 tax year, parents with children or people who care for disabled adults can claim $440 per dependent. For a family with three kids, that’s $1,200.
A key provision of the Patients First Act takes effect on January 1st.
With the goal of trying to reduce surprise medical bills, providers will be required to inform patients how much they’ll pay for planned hospital stays and medical procedures.
And the Massachusetts Parentage Act updates parents’ legal rights for the first time in 40 years.
It makes the language more inclusive to members of the LGBTQ+ community who used surrogacy or invitro fertilization to build their families.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
