More than 200 crashes reported in Mass. as wintry mix causes treacherous driving conditions

DEDHAM, Mass. — Crashes piled up fast on highways and roads across Massachusetts on Thursday as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain created treacherous driving conditions.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation implemented a 40-mph speed restriction on the east and westbound sides of Interstate 90 from the New York border to Framingham due to the rapidly deteriorating road conditions.

As of 3 p.m., Massachusetts State Police said that troopers had responded to 210 crashes that resulted in at least seven injuries. They also helped another 124 motorists who were in need of assistance.

A Boston 25 News reporter spotted an overturned tractor-trailer on the side of the Pike while traveling back from an assignment in Worcester.

Video showed a heavy-duty tow truck at the scene of the crash, as well as multiple emergency crews working to upright the tractor-trailer.

Another Boston 25 News reporter spotted a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 north just before the Interstate 93 split near Top Golf in Canton.

At least one SUV was spun around sideways in a travel lane and a second SUV was stopped near it with visible damage.

The freezing drizzle and rain were expected to stick around into the evening commute, likely leading to slow-going and possibly treacherous driving conditions.

“I would say through the evening commute, we’ve got to be real careful on the roads,” Boston 25 News Meteorologist Shiri Spear warned in her morning forecast.

The Boston 25 Weather team urged drivers to prepare for delays on the roads through the evening.

“Impacts will stretch through the afternoon with a transition to sleet then freezing rain from south to north. The steadiest precipitation will end around 3 p.m., but pockets of drizzle and freezing drizzle will linger until 6 p.m.,” the Boston 25 Weather team wrote in their latest weather blog.

Dozens of crashes were also reported by police in Billerica and Dedham, among other communities.

Hundreds of schools announced closures Thursday due to the expected impacts of the winter storm.
