Stolen paintings returned to Somerville artist following mysterious voicemail

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Nearly a month after a brazen art theft was caught on camera, the artist now says his paintings have been returned following a mysterious voicemail.

Adam Leveille had one of his paintings pulled off the wall at the Somerville Open Studios on Prospect Street on January 5.

Security camera footage shows a person dressed in all black snipping wires and stealing the painting before loading it into a waiting vehicle on Milk Place.

On Wednesday, Boston 25 News Anchor Rachel Keller spoke with Leveille, who says he got a voicemail that he initially thought was a prank, telling him his beloved paintings were in the lobby.

“I ran downstairs my pajamas and there were the two pieces,” Leveille said. “I was very happy to see them back again. Like I said, I had resigned myself to just never seeing them again. And there they were, you know, mostly safe and sound.”

Leveille says the oil painting is worth around $2,000. He says his neighbor saw the man who dropped off the painting, and suspects he may have something to do with the initial robbery.

“My neighbor saw the guy drop in the piece is off,” Leveilla said. “I asked or just, you know, what it looked like. Was he, you know, tall or short, skinny, fat kind of thing. The way that she described him kind of loosely lines up with what you see in the surveillance footage. So it might be the same person.”

Leveille told us he’s passed the information on to Somerville Police. But he also said he doesn’t want to get further tangled into this crazy situation.

Somerville Police continue to investigate and no arrests have been made.
