Man dies after being found unconscious on Ipswich street in t-shirt, shorts in bitter cold

IPSWICH, Mass. — Investigators are releasing few answers after a man was found unconscious on the ground wearing a t-shirt and shorts in bitterly cold temperatures.

Ipswich Police were called to Caroline Avenue Tuesday around 4:30 a.m.

A neighbor first spotted the unresponsive man next a blue Jeep with apparent physical injuries to his face and legs.

The 65-year-old man was transported to Beverly Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not said if it appears to be a potential crime or an accident.

“He was in his shorts and bare feet and had a t-shirt on. He looked like he’d been laying there for quite some time,” said one neighbor. “His face was all beat up, and it looked like his legs were cut up.”

Neighbors identified the man as a familiar face in the neighborhood who had been staying in a nearby apartment.

They said the blue Jeep that was towed away from the scene belongs to him.

“He didn’t live here. He was staying with somebody, and he’s only been here a couple of months,” said neighbor Diane Veno. “I hope they find whoever did it or find out why it happened.”

Boston 25 News spoke with a neighbor who said he saw the man Monday night around 10 p.m.

“He rode by me, and he would usually wave. I said, he didn’t wave. I didn’t care because it was cold and I wanted to get back in the house,” said neighbor Paul Blades.

Blades is now left to wonder what happened after that and how long the man had been lying on the ground for.

“To come out the next day and find out, I felt bad. I said, gee, if he was getting out of the car, he might’ve slipped and fell,” he said. " I don’t know whether I could’ve done anything.”

Police are now waiting on autopsy results and haven’t said if they are looking to speak with anyone in connection with the death.

The man’s identity has not yet been formally released by authorities.

State police detectives assigned to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s Office, Ipswich police, and the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the man’s death.
