ATTLEBORO, Mass. — A Guatemalan man was convicted of a two-decade old rape case in Fall River Superior Court on Thursday.

51-year-old Eduardo Mendez was found guilty of aggravated rape and will be sentenced on Monday.

On June 9, 1994, the victim, who was 36 years old at the time, was walking home when she was approached from behind by a group of men, dragged into a nearby apartment hallway where she was raped by Mendez, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn, III.

The men fled and a 14-year-old who was walking in the area with a friend heard the victim’s screams and brought her to the Attleboro Police Station.

After being transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, an evidence collection kit was performed on the victim, which went untested until 2019.

That year, the kit was sent to the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory for testing, where male DNA sperm cells were revealed, confirming Mendez’s identity in the crime, according to officials.
