WAKEFIELD, Mass, — The newest coffee shop in Wakefield is the result of two mothers coming together to create a place where their children—each with different abilities—can work and gain independence.
“It’s been a labor of love, and a long journey,” said Janise Mamayek, mother of a staff member and co-creator of INspire Cafe. “We’ve embraced every part of the community, and they’ve supported us in making this vision a reality. We are so grateful to be here today.”
INspire Cafe officially opened its doors on a snowy Saturday morning on Main Street in Wakefield. Open Wednesday through Sunday, the cafe’s mission is to offer inclusive, integrated employment opportunities for individuals of all abilities.
“It’s nice to have different opportunities to work,” said staff member Kevin Burke.
Two years ago, a similar cafe closed, leaving many staff members without jobs and feeling a loss of independence.
“It’s a blessing to be here with them again, working with the team again we missed it,” said Burke.
That’s when Marie Rej and Janise Mamayek got to work—creating a business plan, securing local and state funding, and receiving donations from local tradespeople to renovate and open the space.
“I hope this inspires other families to do the same thing,” said Rej, also a co-creator of INspire Cafe. “It’s possible, and it can be done.”
It took two motivated mothers and a strong community of support—but now, INspire Cafe is open for business!
