Kohl’s to close Massachusetts location, layoff dozens of workers

STOUGHTON, Mass. — Kohl’s Corporation plans to close one of its 25 Massachusetts department stores after the holiday season and lay off nearly 80 people who work at the location.

The Wisconsin-base chain filed a public WARN notice last week, notifying the state that it plans to close the Kohl’s store at 501 Technology Center Drive in Stoughton on Feb. 7, 2025, affecting a total of 77 employees.

News of the impending store closure comes as the 89,136-square-foot space is up for lease in an online Newmark property listing.

Some employees at the Stoughton store could remain employed for a limited time after the closure to “assist with administrative tasks,” Bethany Keller, senior vice president for human resources at Kohl’s, told the Boston Business Journal.

Massachusetts is home to the third most Kohl’s stores in the Northeast, behind only New York and New Jersey, public records show.

Other Kohl’s locations in Massachusetts include Burlington, Chelmsford, Danvers, Dartmouth, East Walpole, Framingham, Hingham, Hyannis, Lenox, Leominster, Mansfield, Medford, Milford, Millbury, Northborough, Pembroke, Plymouth, Saugus, Seekonk, Springfield, Taunton, West Springfield, Woburn, and Worcester.

In November, Kohl’s Chief Executive Officer Tom Kingsbury announced plans to step down in January 2025.
