BARNSTABLE, Mass. — The United States Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts is investigating alleged “potential criminal activity” involving a Massachusetts state representative.
Democrat Christopher Richard Flanagan, who represents the town of Brewster, the town of Dennis, and Precincts 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8, of the town of Yarmouth on Cape Cod, is the subject of a federal investigation that the U.S. Attorney’s Office adopted in December 2024, according to the Barnstable Police Department.

Police said federal investigators were looking into both Flanagan and the “Chris Flanagan for State Representative for the 1st Barnstable District” campaign.
Gov. Maura Healey swore Flanagan in for another term during a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House on New Year’s Day, according to a Facebook post on the Chris Flanagan for State Representative for the 1st Barnstable District page.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, the Massachusetts Republican Party called for Flanagan’s immediate resignation, alleging “multiple instances of corruption and public deception.”
“Representative Flanagan has repeatedly misled the public and violated campaign finance laws, as documented by OCPF,” MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale stated. “His pattern of illegal actions has escalated to the point of federal scrutiny. This is not a partisan issue; it’s about restoring trust in our elected officials. Representative Flanagan must resign immediately to uphold the integrity of the office he holds.”
MassGOP Vice Chair Judy Crocker added, “The residents of the 1st Barnstable District deserve a representative with integrity who prioritizes their interests—not someone under active federal investigation. From misleading voters into believing he had Republican support, to campaign finance violations documented by OCPF, and now reports of tens of thousands of dollars allegedly being stolen, it’s clear that the trust has been broken. The jig is up. Flanagan must resign so the people of the 1st Barnstable District can move forward with the honest and ethical representation they deserve.”
Boston 25 News has reached out to Flanagan’s office for comment on the allegations and calls for resignation.
