Investigation underway after Norwood police officer fires at fleeing vehicle

NORWOOD, Mass. — Police in Norwood are investigating after an officer discharged their firearm at a shooting suspect on Sunday morning.

Officers received a call from a resident for an apparent domestic incident in the area of Folan Avenue, and upon arrival officers heard a series of gunshots and spotted a car racing toward them, according to Norwood police.

One officer fired their service weapon at the vehicle in an to attempt to stop it, but the driver continued on at a high rate of speed and fled the area, police said.

No one was struck by any of the gunfire.

Neighbors along Folan Avenue were shaken when they woke up to gunfire.

“This morning I just heard about 8 loud shots and I knew it was gunshots,” Theresa Gelinas said.

“My sister came running in my bedroom yelling that there were gunshots outside and she was hysterical,” Ann Sullivan added.

Although no one has hurt in the shootout, bullets shattered a neighbor’s door across the street and the glass was completely blown out.

“Very scary like I said this is a very quiet neighborhood, all the neighbors are really nice it’s peaceful it’s not something you see around here or hear,” Gelinas explained. “I was really kind of worried of whether I’d be allowed to leave but there was an officer here who helped guide me through the tape so that I could get out.”

Sullivan says nothing like this has happened here recently. She and her sister were worried others could have been hurt by those flying bullets.

“She was sitting right in front of the window you know could have been a gunshot could have come through there too so pretty concerned about that,” Sullivan said.

State police are assisting Norwood police with the investigation.
