CONCORD, N.H. — An impaired motorist drove 12 miles in the wrong direction on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire during Thursday’s winter storm, damaging multiple vehicles, authorities said.
Troopers responding to a report of a blue pickup truck traveling north on the southbound side of the highway in Concord around 4 p.m. slowed traffic in an attempt to prevent a multi-vehicle wreck on the partially snow-covered road but the suspect drove around cruisers and a line of other vehicles, according to New Hampshire State Police.
The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Matthew Burt, of Concord, then barreled into two southbound vehicles near mile marker 47 and continued driving in the wrong direction to mile marker 52, where troopers deployed a tire deflation device, state police said.
Three tires on Burt’s truck were deflated and he was ultimately arrested on charges including aggravated driving under the influence, two counts of felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, two counts of conduct after an accident, disobeying an officer, reckless operation, and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Burt was ordered held at the Merrimack County Jail pending arraignment.
The drivers of the other vehicles struck by Burt were evaluated on the scene as a precaution, state police noted.
An investigation remains ongoing.
