BOSTON — Drones are the talk of the town at Logan Airport after two men were arrested for flying one “dangerously” close to the airport over the weekend.
The drone sighting came as several have been spotted on the east coast of the country without any explanation of where they’re coming from.
“I don’t know if it’s real or if it’s a threat at all, maybe it’s a distraction from some other things that have been going on,” said Bryce Davis, who flew into Logan Airport Monday morning from Jacksonville.
Boston police said on Saturday afternoon that an officer was able to identify the drone at the airport and locate the operators’ position on Long Island, one of the Boston Harbor islands.
Police said the Harbor Patrol Unit went to the island because of the proximity to Logan Airport and located three people in the decommissioned Long Island Health Campus.
They ran and only two out of the three were caught.
Robert Duffy, 42, of Charlestown, and 32-year-old Jeremy Folcik, of Bridgewater, were arrested and charged with trespassing. Additional charges are expected.
Police said they found a drone in Duffy’s backpack.
Boston 25 security analyst Dan Linskey said the circumstances of that drone occurrence appear to be different from what’s happening in other areas.
He suspects a classified operation is underway that we may never know the nature of.
“Whoever is conducting these operations for our safety and security will probably not report on it publicly because they need to keep this secret and make sure our technology is on cutting edge and ready to, prepared to defend ourselves if we need to deploy it overseas,” Linskey explained.
Linskey added that if the drones were of concern, they’d likely be intercepted.
“I’ll be looking for them though while we’re here the next few days,” Davis added. “I’m excited to see one honestly.”
Another traveler, Willard Warwick added, “I’d be more excited if it was aliens, that’d be fun.”
Boston 25 reached out to lawmakers in Congress, but it appears they have not been briefed on the drone situation yet.
Boston police are still searching for the third suspect responsible for flying a drone at Logan Airport from Long Island.
