Gov. Healey orders pay increases for Massachusetts lawmakers

BOSTON, Mass — Massachusetts lawmakers are expected to start the new year with a pay bump.

In a letter sent to State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, Governor Maura Healey ordered an 11.39% increase in legislative base pay.

The Executive Office of Administration and Finance noted in a statement that the Constitution requires Healey to determine changes over the prior two years to median household income in Massachusetts and directs that Legislative pay increase accordingly.

House Speaker Ron Mariano and Senate President Karen Spilka would also see salaries of about $224,000 annually.

House and Senate members would also see the 11.39% increase.

Their pay would increase from about $73,000 a year to $82,000 a year.

Healey’s pay could be adjusted to just under $244,000 a year based on adjustments to Healey’s salary stemming from a separate calculation done by Treasurer Goldberg and shared prior, according to the Executive Office for Administration and Finance.

Some lawmakers earn extra stipends for expenses and travel, as well as taking on leadership roles.

Healey’s office used data from the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to determine the increase.
