CORINNA, Maine — A Maine family is mourning the loss of a 3-year-old boy who went missing from his home and was later found dead outside in the snow over the weekend, state police said Monday.

The boy’s father reportedly found him dead outside “a distance from the family residence” and with “injuries which appear to be consistent with exposure to the elements,” state police said in a statement.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death, state police said.

At approximately 8:28 a.m. Sunday, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a home on Exeter Road in Corinna.

The caller reported that her three-year-old nephew was missing from the family home.

Emergency crews and members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North responded to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Health and Human Services also responded and are assisting state police with the investigation.

“The Maine State Police believes this is an isolated incident and there is no public safety concern,” state police said.

Corinna is a small town northwest of Bangor. The town’s population was 2,221 at the 2020 census.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
