BOSTON — A former U.S. Postal Service employee who worked in Revere and Melrose pleaded guilty on Monday to charges that he stole hundreds of pieces of mail and government funds, the U.S. Attorney said.

Michael Murray, 37, of Lynn, pleaded guilty in federal court in Boston to one count of theft of mail matter by an employee and one count of theft of government money, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in a statement.

U.S. District Court Judge Leo Sorokin scheduled sentencing for Feb. 3. A federal grand jury indicted Murray in April.

Murray worked as a postal clerk at the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office from about September 2022 through July 2023, Foley said.

Between April and July of 2023, Murray “used his official position to steal the contents of hundreds of pieces of mail entrusted to him” including gift cards, cash and checks totaling approximately $3,422, prosecutors said.

During the same time period, Murray stole and fraudulently negotiated USPS money orders by generating them for postal customers for his own use totaling approximately $5,131, prosecutors said.

For mail theft, Murray faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

For stealing government funds over $1,000, Murray faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
