SOMERVILLE, Mass. — A woman has died following a fire in Somerville on Thursday.
Firefighters responding to a fire in a wooded area between Alewife Brook and the bike path along Alewife Brook Parkway around 4 p.m. found heavy flames on arrival, which were quickly knocked down, according to officials.
Investigators found a deceased woman in what appeared to be an encampment. Her identity is not being released at this time.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
“This was a very sad event and our thoughts are with the victim right now,” said Chief Charles Breen.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office says piled wood and debris in the area contributed to the heavy blaze. Firefighters even had to cut through a chain link fence to access the area. Although the fire was knocked down within 10 minutes, crews extinguished hot spots at the scene for about 3 hours.
Investigators say they identified multiple potential ignition sources for the flames, all of which appear accidental.
An investigation into the fire remains open.
