DA identifies woman found dead in western Massachusetts park

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Authorities on Wednesday identified a woman whose body was found in a park in western Massachusetts earlier this month.

Officers responding to a report of a body discovered on Trafton Road in Springfield on Tuesday, Jan. 7, found a woman dead in the Camp Star Angelina area of Forest Park, according to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.

The DA’s office identified the victim as Joann Garelli, 56, of West Springfield.

Facts and circumstances surrounding Garelli’s death weren’t immediately clear.

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda is investigating Garelli’s death.

Forest Park is a popular walking and hiking area that features a zoo, rose and aquatic gardens, tennis and basketball courts, baseball fields, a playground, and an amphitheater, among other attractions.
