“CARE for the Cape and Islands” launches recycling program for Cape ballparks

The non-profit “CARE for the Cape and Islands” has launched an initiative to reduce litter and increase recycling at Cape Cod Baseball League ballparks.

The pilot program is already underway at Chatham Anglers’ home games and could be underway at all CCBL home games next year if successful.

Jill Talladay, Executive Director of “CARE for the Cape and Islands” told Boston 25 News the initiative is part of the Take Care Cape Cod campaign and boasts a cartoon pirate reminding people of the three R’s - reuse, reduce and recycle.

Although thousands flock to Cape ballparks every summer, none of the fields support recycling efforts. Kid volunteers, dubbed “recycle ambassadors” patrol the stands, collecting plastic and waste that may otherwise end up as litter.

“It’s amazing what reaction they’re getting from adults,” said Tallady. “When a kid tells them to take care, they actually respond.”

“They’re doing something good for the community and the environment and we’re super proud of them,” said Steve Borkasnski, director of MassBev.

Program leaders hope CCBL fans will see the volunteers sporting the bright orange vests at every ballpark in 2024.

“Cape Cod is a special place and we all need to be on the same team to keep it that way,” said Borkanski.
