Customers, staff scatter after SUV crashes into popular Newton café

NEWTON, Mass. — Customers and staff at Pressed Café in Newton are breathing a sigh of relief after a BMW SUV rammed into the side of the business.

It happened Monday afternoon in a busy strip mall plaza on Needham Street.

Images captured after the impact show the vehicle lodged in the glass side door of the business.

The SUV crashed into an area where customers usually wait for their orders.

No one inside Pressed was hurt, but an employee came close to being hit.

“God was watching over a lot of people today. There’s person we’ve seen from a video inside who just missed getting struck,” said  Lt. Bruce Apotheker, of the Newton Police Department. “That’s usually a very busy area.”

The driver in her 50s and her teenage daughter in the front seat were taken away on stretchers with non-life threatening injuries.

Two teenagers in the backseat of the SUV were unharmed.

“I think she meant to do reverse. She was meaning to back up and she just went forward,” said Pressed employee Gianna Moreschi. “It was crazy.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Pressed was closed for the duration of the afternoon and evening on Monday.

The business plans to reopen on Tuesday.
