TAUNTON, Mass. — Several students were transported to an area hospital after feeling sick from a hazmat incident on Monday.

According to Taunton Fire Chief Steven Lavigne, crews were called to Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School around 1:48 p.m. for a possible hazardous materials exposure at a building that housed the biotechnology, dental, and community health programs.

The teacher called 911 after students reported a strong odor in the classroom. Officials say there was no active chemical spill or leak, but students were evacuated from the class.

The 16 students and teacher were then moved to an adjacent building, where first responders evaluated them for minor symptoms, including dizziness and lightheadedness, according to authorities.

Officials say 7 students were transported to Morton Hospital for evaluation. The remaining students were released to their parents or guardians.

Investigators say they did not detect any unusual readings in the building, and the Taunton Board of Health approved the building’s reopening.

Classes will resume at normal time on Tuesday.

“We are extremely thankful that no one was seriously injured as a result of this incident,” Superintendent-Director Magalhaes said. “I would like to commend the teacher who quickly removed the students from the classroom to safety. We are grateful to the Taunton Fire Department for their prompt response.”

The cause of the exposure remains under investigation.

Taunton Fire, Brewster Ambulance EMS, and a Massachusetts Department of Fire Services’ Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Division team all responded.
