Boston school teacher exchanged nude photos with teen girls in at least 6 states, police say

BROOKLINE, Mass. — A Boston school teacher is facing criminal charges after investigators say he used social media to exchange nude photos with teenage girls in at least six different states.

John Gavin, 34, of Brookline, was arrested Friday morning on charges including enticement of a child under the age of 16, dissemination of material harmful to minors, enticement of a child under the age of 18 to pose in a state of nudity, and possession of visual material of a child depicted in sexual conduct, according to the Brookline Police Department.

Gavin, a teacher at the Josiah Quincy Upper School, had been engaging in sexual communications with girls between the ages of 12 and 17 in Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, police said.

“It is alleged that during some of these conversations, Gavin disclosed that he is a school teacher, enticed the girls to send nude photos of themselves, and sent photos of himself,” police stated in a news release.

In a statement, Boston Public Schools confirmed that Gavin was “immediately placed the individual on administrative leave.”

A BPS spokesperson said the “safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority” and reiterated to school families that charges against Gavin “are not related to BPS or BPS students.”

Police noted that Gavin previously worked as a paraprofessional at the Hayes School from January to August 2020.

Gavin was arraigned in Brookline District Court after his arrest and ordered held on $50,000 bail.

If Gavin posts bail, police said he will be placed on GPS with an exclusion zone of the Josiah Quincy School. He’ll also be required to remain in Massachusetts, surrender his passport, and refrain from using social media or applications that allow for texting such as Discord, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok.

While there have been not victims identified in Massachusetts, anyone who believes they were contacted by Gavin is urged to contact Brookline detectives at 617-730-2244.

An investigation is ongoing.
