‘Blatant attack’: Local groups file suit for expectant mothers impacted by Trump immigration order

CHELSEA, Mass. — Less than 24 hours after signing an executive order that denies US citizenship from the children of immigrant parents, lawsuits are being filed to try and prevent the rules from taking effect.

Lawyers for Civil Rights filed the lawsuit alongside La Colaborativa and the Brazilian Worker Center, claiming the order unlawfully denies citizenship to babies born here in the US and all the benefits that come with it—meaning they wouldn’t receive a social security number or be able to get a passport.

Lawyers for Civil Rights goes on to say that the president cannot decide who becomes a citizen at birth and this order is racist—calling it “a blatant attack on immigrant families.”

The 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone born within the U.S. territory

In court, organizations like La Colaborativa hope to halt the implementation of the executive order. They claim this would create a caste system in the country where some US-born citizens would have fewer rights than others. A similar lawsuit was filed by immigrant groups in New Hampshire.

This executive order comes on the heels of the Trump administration, which announced that it would start conducting ICE raids.

According to reports, Boston is among five cities that will initially be targeted—with ICE going after illegal immigrants who have committed crimes.
