Bill Belichick visits multiple Mass. high schools, offers scholarship on UNC recruiting trip

NEEDHAM, Mass. — Former Patriots head coach and new sideline commander at the University of North Carolina Bill Belichick visited multiple Massachusetts high schools on a recruiting trip this week as he prepares for his first season in Chapel Hill.

Bill Belichick made stops at St. Sebastian’s School in Needham, Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, and Arlington High School on Thursday.

The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach offered a scholarship to Marky Walbridge, a 17-year-old junior offensive tackle at St. Sebastian’s.

“Wow!” Walbridge wrote in a post on X. “After an incredible visit from Coach Bill Belichick, I am truly blessed to have received an offer from the University of North Carolina!”

Walbridge, who stands 6 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 270 pounds, also has offers from Penn State, Michigan, Tennessee, Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Boston College, Temple, UConn, UMass, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, according to sports recruiting website 24/7 Sports.

Walbridge played on Hanover High School’s varsity football squad in 2021 before transferring to St. Sebastian’s, The Patriot Ledger reported.

Belichick signed his official employment contract with North Carolina this week, formalizing last month’s hiring. The sides agreed to a five-year deal, though only the first three years are guaranteed with $10 million per year in base and supplemental salary with another $3.5 million available in bonuses.

He is taking over a college program for the first time at the age of 72.
