Authorities identify man found dead in frigid cold on snowy North Shore street

IPSWICH, Mass. — Authorities on Wednesday identified a man who died after being found unconscious on the ground in the frigid cold on a snowy street on the North Shore of Massachusetts early Tuesday morning.

Ipswich police officers responding to a report of an unresponsive person on the ground outside of a vehicle in the area of 33 Caroline Avenue around 4:30 a.m. found a 65-year-old man in need of immediate medical treatment, according to Essex District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Ipswich Police Chief Paul Nikas.

The man, who Tucker and Nikas identified as Michael Brooks, was rushed to Beverly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There was no immediate word on the facts and circumstances surrounding Brooks’ death, but investigators said there is “no wider threat to the public” at this time.

Neighborhood residents said Brooks was dressed in summertime attire when his body was discovered in the extreme cold.

“He was in his shorts and bare feet and had a t-shirt on. He looked like he’d been lying there for quite some time,” one neighbor told Boston 25 News. “His face was all beat up, and it looked like his legs were cut up.”

Neighbors said a blue Jeep was towed away from the scene.

Police are now waiting on autopsy results and haven’t said if they are looking to speak with anyone in connection with the death.

State police detectives assigned to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s Office, Ipswich police, and the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the man’s death.
