4-year-old girl dead, mom hospitalized after being struck by car while walking in New England town

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Authorities have identified a 4-year-old girl who died after being struck by a vehicle while walking with her mother in a southern New England town earlier this week.

Officers responding to a report of a pedestrian crash in the area of Hamlet Avenue near the Hamlet Middle School in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday found a mother and daughter who had been hit by a car, according to Woonsocket police and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office.

The young girl, Eliza Khan, was critically injured in the crash and rushed to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she passed away on Tuesday night.

Eliza’s mother, 32-year-old Dena Khan, remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Investigators identified the driver in the crash as a 25-year-old man from Woonsocket. He is said to be cooperating with investigators.

It’s believed that the man lost control of his vehicle and struck a snowbank before crashing into the mother and daughter, according to reports.

No charges were filed in connection with the crash as of Wednesday morning.

An investigation remains ongoing.
