300 people face layoffs as popular retail chain prepares to close 2 Massachusetts stores

PEABODY, Mass. — Hundreds of people are facing layoffs as a result of fashion retailer Nordstrom’s decision to shutter a pair of popular store locations in Massachusetts.

Nordstrom announced plans last week to close its Peabody location at the Northshore Mall on Jan. 31, 2025, and its Braintree location at the South Shore Plaza on March 8, 2025.

State records indicated that 134 workers at the Peabody location and 166 workers at the Braintree locations will be affected by the looming layoffs.

All 300 employees will officially be laid off on March 8, 2025, the records showed.

In a statement, a Nordstrom spokesperson told Boston 25, “We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in the area by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels. Decisions like this are never easy and we understand the impact they have on our team members. We’re committed to taking care of our employees through this transition, which includes supporting those who are interested in finding another role within Nordstrom.”

According to the company’s online store locator, Nordstrom will still operate locations in Millbury, Framingham, Natick, Westwood, Burlington, Boston, Danvers, and a Nordstrom Rack in Braintree.

Simon, a real estate investment trust engaged in the ownership of the Northshore Mall and South Shore Plaza, confirmed that Dick’s House of Sport is moving into Nordstrom’s Peabody store and a multifaceted Dick’s Sporting Goods is moving into Nordstrom’s Braintree location.
