Cleanup underway Monday morning after weekend weather whiplash

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — After a weekend of weather whiplash, people were shoveling out ahead of the Monday morning commute.

“Nothing like New England weather to throw you for a loop,” said Mike Hammer of Plymouth. “I mean, 60 degrees, out and about it was great, couldn’t ask for better weather Saturday, and then yesterday and today you’re like holy crap, nothing like throwing a little monkey wrench at you.”

While the snow was light and fluffy, many people in Plymouth said it took a while to clear the driveway to go to work Monday morning.

“There’s been quite a bit of snow,” said Chuck Ellis of Plymouth. “I’ve already shoveled twice -- last night and [this morning].”

Heavy snow fell early Monday in Plymouth and tapered off as the morning wore on.

“I was expecting 1 to 3 inches, and we got like 8, so that was disappointing,” said Carol Tagg of Plymouth. “I’m ready for the warmer weather for sure.”

Winter driving tips from MassDOT:

- Clear snow and ice from all windows and lights, even the hood and roof, before driving, (start with the tailpipe).

- Leave plenty of room for stopping

- Remember that the posted speed limits are for dry pavement.

- Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in adverse conditions.

- Bridge decks freeze first. Due to the difference in the exposure to air, the surface condition can be worse on a bridge than on the approach road.

- Exit ramps are an even greater challenge during the winter since they may have received less anti-icing material than the mainline.

- Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows – stay back at least 200 feet and don’t pass on the right.

- Seat belts should be worn at all times – it’s the law.

- Most importantly please remember to slow down.
