Uber adds ‘fuel fee’ to support drivers as gas prices soar

NEWTON, Mass. — Starting Wednesday, people who book rides through Uber or order food through Uber Eats will have to pay a new fuel surcharge.

Uber Technologies Inc. announced the surcharge Friday to help its drivers offset rising gas prices.

Users will pay an extra $0.45 or $0.55 per Uber trip and an additional $0.35 or $0.45 per Uber Eats order depending on location. All of the money will go directly to the drivers.

“We know that prices have been going up across the economy, so we’ve done our best to help drivers and couriers without placing too much additional burden on consumers,” the company said in a statement. “Over the coming weeks we plan to listen closely to feedback from consumers, couriers and drivers. We’ll also continue to track gas price movements to determine if we need to make additional changes.”

The price surcharge will remain in place for the next 60 days at which point the company will determine if it should be extended.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in Massachusetts as of Monday was $4.36 a gallon. Prices have been hovering around this number for the past few days.
