Toni Morrison’s, “The Bluest Eye”, to open at the Huntington Theater

BOSTON — After more than a year of delays and COVID restrictions, Director Awoye Timpo can finally continue her journey to bringing Toni Morrison’s, “The Bluest Eye,” to audiences at the Huntington Theater.

The show opens on January 28th.

Adapted from Morrison’s first novel by Lydia R. Diamond, the play reimagines Morrison’s haunting and powerful book.

“The story follows a community, and we get to hear the stories of a community through the eyes of two young girls,” Timpo told Boston 25. ”The things people are striving for, the things people are running away from, the ways people are looking out for each other or not and how that affects everybody’s life.”

The Bluest Eye tells the story of Pecola, a young Black girl who believes everything in her world would be made wonderful if only she had blue eyes.

Published in 1970, The Bluest Eye quickly charted a new path in American literature by placing young Black girls at its center.

“To take something so vast and really think about what are the kind of essential events of the story and find a way to string them together in a way and fells dramatic,” Timpo says.

“I hope that people can look at this piece that feels like a piece from the past and really understand that it’s a piece from the present and help us understand what the work is to lead a larger societal healing.”

ASL-INTERPRETED PERFORMANCE: Friday, February 11 at 8pm. The Huntington offers American Sign Language interpretation at designated performances for patrons who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
